2 Oct 2008, Spring Kata Course JFA Judge-Examiner Results, Ivor Endicott-Davies

Please find below the results for Judge/Examiner certification taken from the recent OJU Spring Kata Course held at Olympic Park Sydney on 26 Sep 2008. The OJU Kata Commission would like to thank you for supporting the course and especial those who came from Interstate and from overseas. I have since received a letter from Sato-sensei, the Senior Sensei of the Kodokan group, who wanted to have their sincere regards and complements passed on to all participants. They were especially complimentary about your Dojo manners and dedication to the learning of kata.

The Kata Commission has spent a lot of time since in establishing a fair outcome given such tremendous effort. We realize that the judging system was new to most of you and the majority of the group handled the learning and application very well.
Some of you may be disappointed with your results, however this should not detract from your effort and at the very least has given you a sound understand as to what is required to be a Judge or Examiner in JFA Australia. We encourage you all to continue to master the various kata and the judging procedure and invite you to represent yourselves at the very next opportunity.

Judge/Examiner Results
To be considered for an OJU/Continental Judges Certification the incumbent will be expected to have a judging score consistently within the 10% band of the average score taken from the Judges, judging the same Pairs. Those who have current OJU rating were based on their consistent average scores over 2008, at OJU, Australian Nationals and the Spring Kata Course.

Included below are the JFA Judge/Examiner ratings. JFA State rating certifies the person to sit on examination panels at the invitation of a State Dan Grade Commission and examine Kata up to 3rd Dan. JFA National rating is required to Examine 4th Dan and above. These JFA ratings remain current for as long as the incumbent continues to Judge at JFA/IJF Kata events. If after two years the incumbent has not been rated then their rating may expire. The level of Dan Grade required to sit on a Dan Grade Examination Panel is outlined in the JFA Dan Grading Syllabus. The Judge/Examiner rating is recommended within the following bands listed below. However those who have given low scores may have their rating up graded where knowledge of the Kata is evident but the scoring has been deemed to be harsh.

  • 10% band within 95% to 105% OJU
  • 20% band within 90% to 110% National
  • 40% band within 80% to 120% Sate/Provincial

The judging examination had many candidates from around Australia. The below table shows those successful candidates their rating for NSW only. For the complete list, please contact Ivor Endicott-Davies.
