BBR News 2009

BBR news articles from 2008 and prior years.

1 Nov 2009, Spring Dan Grading and Promotion

Batsugun Grading 2009Congratulations to Patryk Kelly and Beau De Casanove (both from Zenbu Judo Club) who earned their black belts (shodan) and Karl Žuvela (Willoughby Judo Club) who earned his 2nd Dan black belt over on 1 Nov 2009 through Batsugun promotion. Batsugun promotion requires a candidate to consequtively beat a number of other candidates without a loss. In this case, Patryk and Beau beat five other 1 Kyu brown belts, while Karl beat 2 other shodan black belts and six 1 Kyu brown belts to gain their promotion; consequtive wins by ippon, without a loss, and without rest between matches.

Dan Grading 2009Also, congratulations to Steve Clifford (Sutherland PCYC Judo Club) and Michael Griffiths (Woy Woy Judo Club) who earned their black belts through Dan Examination by demonstrating their ability and knowledge of Judo techniques (Tachiwaza and Newaza), Nage no Kata, and competition rules. Steve and Michael demonstrated and talked about the various Tachiwaza techniques, including advance throws, renraku waza or combinations, and counters. In newaza, they needed to demonstrate holds, chokes, arm-bars, turnovers, and escapes. With their partners, they demonstrated very good proficiency in Nage no Kata.

8 Jul 2009, NSW STATE COACHING FORUM - THE FUTURE DEVELOPMENT OF CONTEST JUDO

This year saw a solid performance at the Nationals by NSW. It is agreed by most that we need to continue the great work done by the coaches and players in 2009. We want to improve on the result, consolidate contest Judo for the future and get more support for the effort going into our NSW Team.

The BBR, as the technical platform for the State, will coordinate the Forum with a view to foster discussions and decissions that will establish a clearer direction, the needs, and support for Coaching staff and Team Members alike.

Please come and participate, have your say, be a part of the decision making and future structure that will take NSW contest Judo to a higher level of competitiveness in the near and longer term future.

21 Jun 2009, Successful completion of BBR Dan Grading, Kata Kenshu, NSW Kata Championships, and Batsugun

Three new NSW black belts successfully completed their Dan Grading on 21 Jun 2009 at the North Hall Judo Dojo at the Sydney Olympic Park. They are Clifford Illingworth (Coffs Harbour), Charles Laidlaw (Coffs Harbour), and George Lappin (Shoalhaven). While they have completed testing in demonstrating standing (tachiwaza), mat work (newaza) techniques, Nage no kata, and Judo competition rules, they are encouraged to attend sessions with BBRA instructors for additional training to further their understanding of Judo.

The Kata Kenshu (seminar) was successfully held over two Saturday afternoons with 16 students coming in from various parts of New South Wales. Students spent over eight hours studying Nage no Kata with instructors from the BBRA. Students learned and practiced not only the five groups of throws, but also learned the details of walking and standing during the kata.

NSW Kata Championships culminated the work of these students as they demonstrated Nage no Kata. First place was taken by Coffs Harbour's Clifford Illingworth (tori) and Charles Laidlaw (uke).

  • First place: Clifford Illingworth (tori) and Charles Laidlaw (uke)
  • Second Place: George Lappin and Greg Grainger
  • Third Place: Stephen Leadbeater and Rodney Moulder

Batsugun was also held between seven candidates. The Judo spirit was well and good among the candidates. Unfortunately, no one was able to get through the required five consecutive ippon or wazaari wins (See Dan Grading page for details). The BBR hopes the competitors will continue to work on their competitive Judo skills and return to the next Batsugun line-up.

The BBR would also like to recognize Leon McIndoe as the newest Kodokan (KDK) ratified Shodan.
