[06 Sept 06] BBR Development Program Nomination - (Nominations Close October 14th)
The BBR Academy is now calling for nominations for this years
'Development Program'. The BBR Academy as you are aware is run by Volunteer Instructors and the funds
derived from the instruction at the academy are used to fund different levels of Judo development.
This year we have already provided two airfares to Japan for instructors to participate in the Kodokan Kate course.
The BBR Academy would now like to concentrate on developing athletes.
We will be funding 3-4 Airfares for a 10-14 day training trip to Japan pencilled in from 1st December 2006. You will be training at some great
universities and dojo's in Tokyo including the Kodokan. The Judoka will be selected by the BBR Academy instructors based upon athlete
participation in NSW Judo i.e. Competitions, Squad Training, BBR Academy Sessions and Club Training
Airfares will be funded however food and accommodation will need to be funded by the athlete. If we stay at the Kodokan dorms then
accommodation will cost around $300 for trip.
Selection will be based on the following:
- The athlete has a strong potential for development in competitive judo, as identified by the BBR Academy Instructors.
- The athlete has demonstrated a willingness to further their judo development by attending relevant Judo NSW activities (BBR Academy, Tournaments and Squad Training)
Remember - Nominations Close October 14th

The BBR Academy recently
sent 4 of its Special Students to New Zealand for a 3-day training camp. It was
a great success, they even turned on a bit of sunshine for us (it didn't last).
The camp kicked off with a "friendly" teams competition on the Friday night,
which saw the combined Japanese University team go up against both a New Zeeland
team and combined Australian/New Zeeland team. The Australians started off well
with Daniel Waldmann securing a Hiki-Wake (draw) in his match against his Japanese
opponent. Ben Zellner was looking dominant in his match until he was caught with
a surprise flying armbar. Jovan Pejic fighting up a weight division started well
throwing his opponent for waza-ari with seoi-nage before being trapped with osae-komi-waza.
Alex Chew showed why he is "the man" when it comes to ne-waza by armlocking
his opponent in convincing style. The Japanese looked keen to knock-off Morgan
Endicott-Davies Australia's Athens Olympian for U81kg, but after a tentative start
Morgan unleashed his tai-otoshi for ippon, the same technique that gave him a
victory at the Olympic Games in just under 6 seconds.

With the first day out of the way all were glad to hear that the camp
did not include any running sessions, instead the focus was on randori, and there
was plenty of that. Saturday consisted of two 2.5hr randori sessions and a 1hr
technical session in the evening. The Japanese Sensei including former World Championships
Bronze Medallist Ms. Suzuki conducted the technical session.
Sunday it was
more randori and a seminar on "tactical play" by Mr Monahan an A class international
referee. One of the key areas discussed by Mr. Monahan was the extra time being
allowed for the progression of ne-waza techniques; gone are the days when you've
only got 5-10seconds to secure your hold, instead referees will allow ne-waza
to continue as long as there is some sort of action occurring. With this in mind
there is a greater need for strong ne-waza in the current competiton player, something
that will be a focus in BBR Academy sessions to come.
After such a successful
first outing the BBR Academy may look to make this an annual event. Watch this
space for further developments with the BBR Special Student program and the BBR
Academy in general.

We wish

Student program. The BBR Academy will be sending the following to New Zealand
later this month.

- Daniel
Waldman (Uni of NSW Judo Club) -

The BBR Special Student program is an initiative of the BBR with the support
of the Judo Federation of Australia New South Wales (JFA NSW); the program is
aimed at providing technical, financial and administrative support to NSW Judoka
in order to further their judo development. Athletes are selected based on the
following criteria: - The athlete has a strong potential for development
in competitive judo, as identified by the BBR Judo Academy Instructors.
- The
athlete has demonstrated a willingness to further their judo development by attending
the BBR Judo Academy.
As a selected BBR Special Student you will be offered
the chance to represent the BBR at various training camps, competitions and receive
specialist instruction and feedback from the BBR Judo Academy Instructors. The
first scheduled event is a training camp in Wellington New Zealand from 25 February
until 27 February (departing Sydney on 24 Feb and returning on 28 Feb). The training
camp involves the New Zealand National Team and visiting members of a Japanese
University Team
Hi Guys,
Yes it's here. The start of another exciting BBR Judo Academy year. The launch
of the academy has been a great success with numbers on the mat constantly climbing
throughout the year.
This year we will bring you some more excellent judo instruction
by various experts. We will have more club visit nights and the popular randori
nights.
So if you want to perfect your technique, while having an opportunity
to train with a wide variety of partners, come and join us. The BBR Judo Academy
is held every Tuesday night at the Homebush Sports Indoor Centre starting at 7:30
pm. Each session lasts until 9pm and contains warm up technical drills, specialized
instruction by different coaches in their areas of expertise, ending with some
randori .
Our first night back will be on the 8th of February, which is
the second Tuesday of the month.
Looking forward in seeing you all there,
BBR Judo Academy
Dear
Members,
The BBR has just completed a very exciting year. One in which
our younger members played a very significant part in making it happen.
We
are now running the BBR Judo Academy on Tuesday nights which is a fantastic opportunity
for all NSW Judoka. BBR members receive a discount on the nightly entry fee. Please
come along and take advantage of the instruction and the many specialty nights.
Including special guest instructors.
We have also sponsored senior BBR members
to Kodokan Kata Kenshuseis in cooperation with Judo NSW. So we can now offer NSW
judoka expert tuition at our Kata courses.
All in all we are now offering a
new look service and a new look BBR to the NSW Judo Community.
To help us maintain
the ongoing improvements and allow us to continue to service the Judo community
and indeed our BBR members, the BBR board has increased the Annual Membership
fee to $25.00 pa. This represents a cost of 48 cents a week. An amount that we
hope will not cause any hardship in the BBR membership community.
Life membership
fees remain the same. A Bronze medal life membership can be purchased for $150.00,
Silver for $250.00 and Gold for $500.00.
Thank you all for your continued support
of the BBR and Judo in NSW.
