Judo Referees Corner
Updated monthly by Peter Williams (Chairman) of the NSW Referee
Commission.
The following NSW Referee Commissioners are:
REFEREEING RULE UPDATE APPLIED FROM JANUARY 2007
Referees have been newly instructed to referee so as to take into
account the dynamic nature of Judo in implementing a revised ruling
to edge situations. Referees should score a throw as valid where
a throwing action has started while both players are within the contest
area, or while one player is touching the contest area and the throw
is immediately effective.
Note: An action also includes a reaction where the subsequent
throw is immediately apparent. This principle does not extend to
the situation where the action has started when one or both players
are inside and in the subsequent action both players leave the
contest area before a throw is complete. Nor does it extend to
the situation where a player leaves the contest area and then either
player initiates a throwing technique.
The Board has decided in conjunction
with Peter Herrmann, NOT to use the new IN/OUT rule in any
in JFA tournaments until they are fully approved and sanctioned
by IJF.
REFEREE RULE TIP
If two players score a simultaneous Ippon during a contest the referee
shall first confirm with the two corner judges the same result and
recommence the bout as though there was no score given at all.
