The purpose of the Black Belt Dan Grading Preparation Workshop is to review the Kata and technical knowledge and skills Dan candidates are expected to know and present at the Black Belt Dan Grading on 30 Nov. The Kata review will help candidates sharpen up their Kata presentation. If candidates require more assistance with their Kata presentation, they are urged to begin attending the Judo NSW BBR Kata sessions on Saturday mornings. Please contact Ernie Wakamatsu at

Technical knowledge review is based on the JA Grading Policy. All candidates are expected to have reviewed the policy and worked with their club instructor to cover any unfamiliar terminology or techniques.
By the end of the workshop, candidates should feel comfortable and look forward to their Dan promotion candidates.
Refereeing skill and knowledge are outside the scope of the study group. While primarily focused on black belt promotion candidates, 2nd and 1st Kyu grade cadets and seniors are welcome to attend.
The study group shall meet as follows:
- Date: 15, 22 and 29th November 2025 (Saturdays)
- Session Times: 10 AM-12:00 Noon (to review Kata) and 1:30 – 4:00pm (to review technical requirements)
- Place: Judo NSW Martial Arts Dojo, Newington Armoury
- Cost: $60 per session or $150 for all 3 sessions
The study group will be led by BBR instructors, but the study group will be highly interactive as Dan promotion candidates will show and explain to each other the techniques in Tachiwaza (standing techniques) and Newaza (mat techniques).
