Dan Grading Information
Dan Grading is held twice a year (Mid Year & End of Year) with relevant notices placed on the Judo NSW website prior to each of the gradings, including any Kata preparation sessions to be held . The Dan grading will also be accompanied with Kata Kenshu and Batsugun competition.

Dan Grading Requirements
Dan grading requirements are detailed in the Grading Policy found in the JA web site. Questions regarding the Dan Grade requirements may be addressed to the JA.
Dan Grade Application Forms
All Grading applications (including Brown Belt and Batsugun) must be fully completed and submitted with a digital passport-style image to the Judo NSW office (high-quality scanned documents emailed to [email protected]).
Closing Dates are outlined on the Judo NSW website each year, however are generally early June for Mid Year and October for End Year Gradings.
The following must be included in the Application:
- List of contest and service points claimed (must be detailed – tournament, opponent’s name and grade, details, and dates of refereeing, coaching or administrative positions held).
- A completed Judo biography including grading history.
- The Application form is signed by both the candidate and the relevant club coach.

Application Form – 1st Kyu (Senior Brown) Grading
To be included with application form:
- Points card or list of points claimed (must be detailed – tournament, opponent’s name and grade, details and dates of refereeing, coaching or administrative positions held)
- Two passport-sized photographs
- Two copies of the completed application forms signed by the applicant and coach.

IK-KYU (Senior Brown) Grading
Judo NSW also provides the opportunity for members to grade to Senior Brown Belt at the Dan Grading.
Designed for candidates belonging to Clubs that are not currently able to grade to the Senior Brown Belt within their Club.
All candidates must be eligible as per the requirements of the JA Grading Policy (2023) and must provide prior approval from their relevant Club Coach.

Batsugun Promotion
The BBR may alternatively hold a Batsugun tournament for those Judokas attempting to gain promotion through a special competition. The Batsugun tournament is defined by the JA as the following for Shodan promotions:
Five (5) consecutive wins over the entire course of an approved JA Inc. tournament against different opponents of the same grade or higher. The wins must all be by Ippon.
Prior to participating in a Batsugun tournament, the applicant must provide a completed Dan application form.

Kodokan 1 Dan to 3 Dan Grading Opportunity
Eligible Judo NSW members undertaking Judo NSW 1-3 Dan Grading can also seek to have their JA Dan grade ratified with the Kodokan. You will also need to complete the follow steps prior to the Judo NSW Dan Grade Closing Dates:
Step 1 – Complete the online Kodokan Membership Application Form – click here
Step 2 – Complete the Judo Australia Kodokan Dan Grade Application – download from Files for Download section below.
Step 3 – pay when required the JA invoice for Kodokan Membership & Kodokan Dan Grading. The relevant fees are outlined in the JA Grading Policy (Appendix E) – download from Files for Download section below.
Note: the Judo Australia Kodokan Dan Grade Application must be submitted via email to [email protected] by the Dan Grade closing date.
