Dan Grade Preparation Session 1

Judo NSW and the Black Belt Register (BBR) looks to prepare black belt candidates (Shodan and above) for their upcoming Dan Grading (28th June 2026) by reviewing black belt Judo Kata and technical requirements as described in the latest “Judo Australia National Grading Policy.” At the end of the three day session, attendees should feel confident to meet the Dan grading panel to demonstrate their Judo knowledge.
Refereeing skill and knowledge are outside the scope of the study group. While primarily focused on black belt promotion candidates, 2nd and 1st Kyu grade cadets and seniors are welcome to attend.
The study group shall meet as follows:
- Date: 13, 20 and 27th June 2026 (Saturdays)
- Session Times: 10 AM-12:00 Noon (to review Kata) and 1:30 – 4:00pm (to review technical requirements)
- Place: Judo NSW Martial Arts Dojo, Newington Armoury
- Cost: $60 per session or $150 for all 3 sessions
The study group will be led by BBR instructors, but the study group will be highly interactive as Dan promotion candidates will show and explain to each other the techniques in Tachiwaza (standing techniques) and Newaza (mat techniques). All Dan promotion candidates are expected to have reviewed and study the grading policy, as well as to have a working knowledge of their Kata.
Candidates who do not have a working knowledge of their Kata, should begin attending the Saturday Kata classes (10am, Judo NSW Martial Arts Dojo, Silverwater) as soon as possible.

Second Session, Saturday 20th June 2026
AM – Kata
PM – Shinmeisho, Renraku waza, Kaeshi waza and start Ne Waza requirements
Third Session, Saturday 27th June 2026
AM – Kata
PM – Osaewaza, Turn overs, Moving past the legs, Shime waza, and Kansetsu waza
